The State Benefits Most Veterans Never Claim
Property tax exemptions, free hunting licenses, vehicle registration waivers — and why nobody told you about them.
When veterans think about benefits, they usually think about monthly compensation and VA healthcare. Those are the big ones. But there's an entire second layer — state benefits — that most veterans never fully use, because nobody tells them about it.
Property Tax Exemptions
This is the one that surprises veterans the most. Nearly every state offers property tax exemptions for disabled veterans — and at 100% (or TDIU), some states exempt the entire property tax bill. That's often $3,000–$8,000 per year, every year, tax-free.
Even at lower ratings, partial exemptions are common. A 50% veteran in Texas gets the first $10,000 of their home's assessed value exempted. A 70% veteran gets $12,000. At 100%, it's the full value.
Vehicle Registration and License Plate Benefits
Many states offer free or reduced vehicle registration fees for disabled veterans, along with specially marked "Disabled Veteran" license plates that come with additional privileges — including free parking in handicapped spaces without a separate placard.
Free and Discounted Hunting and Fishing Licenses
This one catches veterans off guard. Dozens of states offer free or deeply discounted hunting and fishing licenses for veterans with service-connected disabilities. At 100%, it's often completely free. These licenses renew annually and add up over time.
Education Benefits for Dependents
At 100% P&T, many states offer tuition waivers at state universities for dependent children — sometimes covering full tuition. This is on top of federal DEA (Dependents' Educational Assistance) benefits and can represent tens of thousands of dollars in education costs.
