Combined Rating Calculator
See exactly how the VA calculates your combined rating — and why 50% + 50% does not equal 100%.
How the VA Calculates Combined Ratings
The VA uses the "whole person" method, not simple addition. It starts with a "whole person" of 100% and applies each disability as a percentage of the remaining ability — highest rating first.
This means two 50% ratings combine to 75%, not 100%. That rounds to 80%.
